DirecTV Now finally hits Roku streaming devices

Roku the popular streaming media player has finally added DirecTV Now to its ever growing list of supported streaming services. Users who own Roku boxes, sticks and TVs can finally download the DirecTV Now app in Roku’s own app store starting today. Not only that, if you’re a new subscriber you also get 1 month free.

Roku is one of the last major streaming platforms that DirecTV needs to support to be able to compete better against its rivals. However, it could be too late since DirecTV is slowly losing customers.

When DirecTV Now launched it has supported iOS, Android, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, selected smart TVs and the web.

Hopefully with the addition of Roku streaming devices , this will increase AT&T’s live TV service.

DirecTV Now has lost momentum with new subscribers. Bloomberg reported that DirecTV Now has peaked back in January of this year with approximately 328,000 subscribers. However, it then lost 3,000 customers in the following month and has had a flat growth in March. DirecTV now also faces some issues. Customers early on experienced a few glitches on the service. This includes freezing and buffering. This has led to users complaining on AT&T’s online forums while others contacted the company directly demanding a refund. Some even went as far as filing complaints with the FCC when they realized that they couldn’t get their refunds despite the service not working as advertised.

Many customers subscribed most likely because the launch offered over 100 channels for only $35 a month. However, that offer has since expired. As of right now, it costs $60 to have that many channels. Add to that, DirecTV Now also gave away either an Amazon Fire Stick or an Apple TV to new subscribers. That sweet deal however is no longer available.

As of right now, DirecTV Now costs $35 a month for 60 channels, $50 a month for 80 channels, $60 a month for 100 channels and $70 a month for 120 channels.

DirecTV Now currently competes against other live TV streaming services like Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, YouTube TV and the newcomer Hulu with its Live TV. DirecTV’s channel selection is one of the best but it doesn’t have cloud DVR even today thus giving its competitors an advantage. DirecTV has said that they will add a cloud DVR but still has not announced when.

Roku is among the popular streaming platform devices. Besides DirecTV Now, Sling TV and PlayStation Vue are also both available on Roku however YouTube TV and the newcomer Hulu with its Live TV are still not.

The market for live TV streaming is still unclear but it is definitely growing. On-demand services however is definitely a big market with services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video giving the users what they want.

Roku has said that DirecTV Now will be available on selected Roku devices which include the Roku Ultra, Roku TV 4K, Roku Premiere+, Roku Premiere, Roku Express+, Roku Express, Roku Streaming Stick, Roku 4, Roku 3, and Roku 2.
